Cheaper Heating Oil Fuels Billions in Savings in Northeast

Cheaper Heating Oil Fuels Billions in Savings in Northeast

On top of the broad savings Americans are reaping from cheaper gasoline, plummeting oil prices stand to bring residents in the Northeast billions more dollars in savings this winter when they fill up their home-heating-oil tanks, according to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal.

As the price of crude falls world-wide, the current average price for heating oil in the U.S.has dropped $1.10 from a year ago to under $3 a gallon for the first time in more than four years, the article states. The Journal quotes Chris Lafakis, a senior economist at Moody’s Analytics, saying that a dollar per gallon in savings over the whole heating season could mean roughly $3 billion in savings for Northeast residents. This translates into hundreds of dollars in savings with each heating-oil fill-up, the Journal writes.

People Filling Oil Tanks Are Paying Less

People Filling Oil Tanks Are Paying Less

Heating oil customers are taking advantage of low heating oil prices by filling their tanks with fuel that is priced 45 cents lower per gallon than one year ago, according to a recent article in the Pottsville Republican, of Pottsville, Pa.

“This is a busier fall season because people are trying to jump on the lower prices,” Shannon Masser, office manager at Liberty Oil Co., told the Republican. “The prices are low, so we are seeing more people filling up their tanks completely. This is probably one of the lowest prices we offered since 2012.”

US Oil Production Expected to Be Highest Since 1972

Total US crude oil production in 2015 will reach its highest level since 1972, the U.S. Energy Information Administration predicted in its recent Short-Term Energy Outlook, reported by Oil & Gas Journal.

Natural Gas Supply Issues Pushed Power Grid Almost to Blackouts

Parts of the Northeastern United States were pushed nearly to power blackouts this winter by a shortage of natural gas supply in the region and other factors, according to a recent report by The Energy Collective

There were three separate problems with natural gas supplies, according to the article. First, the region has become increasingly dependent on natural gas to generate electricity, and natural gas is less available in winter due to heavy demand for home heating. Secondly, there is insufficient natural gas pipeline capacity in the region. Thirdly, some of the natural gas pipeline networks serving the region experienced freeze-ups this winter.

Is Your Home Making You Sick?

To understand why many of today’s health problems can be caused by the home you live in, you need to look back a few years to see what caused this to happen. You see, during the energy crisis of the early 1970s, highly insulated “tight” homes became popular because of their potential to reduce energy costs.
Within a few years, however, complaints started to arise, due to health, and excessive moisture issues caused by indoor pollution, and associated moisture problems within these homes.
In the late 1980s and early 90s, indoor air quality became a nationally recognized issue. Even today, newer and more energy-efficient homes seemed predisposed to the problem.
